The Sweetest Thing

I am still buzzing from the Rock'n Dolls Pin-up Pageant at the Roadmen Round Up during the Langley Good Times Cruise Inn this year. Sweet Lady J walked out and with out hesitation took the crowds breath away. She commanded everyone's attention and stole the show. Her grace, poise, and inner and outer beauty radiated throughout the entire car show. We are so ecstatic and so happy for the beautiful Sweet Lady J winning the title. I had the chance to catch up with her last week to talk about her win, life, and what is next for this blonde bombshell.

Pin-up Perfection Photography: Can you tell us a little bit about who Sweet Lady J is? And how did you come up with your stage name?

Sweet Lady J: That's actually a really funny story I needed a name for the PlayStation network so I could play Call of Duty without messing up my room mates stats. I really like being referred to as a lady. My first and last name start with J, and what the hell I'm sweet as pie! Shortly after I entered my first pageant and knew Sweet Lady J made a much better stage name than sign in. Needless to say I never really did get into Call of Duty but the name stuck.

PUPP: How did you start getting interested in the pin-up lifestyle?

SLJ: My entire life I have been intrigued by Marilyn Monroe and from a very young age I began collecting Marilyn Monroe memorabilia. My love for her began when I discovered a mural in my aunts basement . Of course we were somewhere we shouldn't have been,  but I remember staring up at this life size mural of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn, and thinking, "I want to be just like her" . So from then on I was very interested pin-up girls, vintage style, hair styles, and head pieces.

PUPP: How many pageants have you competed in? Which was your favourite and why?

SLJ: I've been in 4 so far and I've got to say the twice I've been in the Rock n Dolls Pin-up Pageant at Langley Good times has been my favourite.  The show is so exciting and the turn out is so good. Dixie Delight and Lexi Whitewall make you feel so confident and comfortable. I'd highly suggest it to anyone and everyone

PUPP: You looked so confident on stage. Tell us, were you nervous at all? And if so, how did you get through the nerves?

SLJ: I was Soooooo nervous. I had been practicng my lines non stop driving my friends and family bonkers but I knew the more I said it the better I'd feel. I had my backup clip board as a prop with my speech on it just in case but I went up there pretended that I was in a room alone opened my eyes smile and just gave'r.

PUPP: Can you describe with three words how it felt to hear your name called as the first place winner?

SLJ: No. Freaking. Way!

PUPP: Are you going to be competing in any pageants in the future? If so, which ones?

SLJ: Absolutely! I will do the Langley good times again next year but idealistically it's a dream of mine to do Viva Las Vegas.

Sweet Lady J's reaction to her win!

PUPP: What piece of advice would you give to someone entering a pageant for the first time?

SLJ: The bigger the hai the closer to heaven. Don't skimp on the cat eye and smile...smile...smile its contagious. At the end of the day just go out there and have fun. Having fun is the key to success.

PUPP: Why should every woman participate in a pageant?

SLJ: I did my first pageant so I could push myself out of my comfort zone by being in a bathing suit in front of a crowd. I highly suggest doing a pageant for anyone who wants to feel on top of the world and build their confidence.

PUPP: What is next for Sweet Lady J?

SLJ: I've been in 6 magazines so far and now I'd like to be on a cover and model for a clothing company

Rock'n Dolls Pinup Pageant at the Langley Goodtimes Cruise Inn Review!

VROOM VROOM! It was more like Va-va-voom on that hot Saturday, September 12th afternoon during Rock'n Dolls Pinup Pageant at the Roadmen Round Up during the Langley Good Times Cruise-Inn! The Rock'n Dolls truly out did themselves. They were the talk of the car show, and rightfully so. Shimona Henry (Pin-up Perfection Photography Head Honcho/Photographer) and myself, Helly Hepburn were there to catch the show and snap a few pictures. Read on for my review on this amazing day! Or ya know, just look at the pretty girls in the pictures!

Dixie Delight and Lexi Whitewall, the duo that make up the Rock'n Dolls opened the show by walking out to the sweet tunes of Willy and the Wannabees and went on to introduce the audience to the excellent panel of judges. On the panel was international model and body positive bad ass Ruby Roxx. The sexy and ever so talented owner of Kitty Nights West and international burlesque performer Burgundy Brixx. And last but certainly not least, coming all the way from Tacoma, Washington was the babe magnet himself and eye candy for the girls, Roadmen Butch from the Roadmen Car Club Washington Chapter. The judges definitely had the hardest job I have no idea how they chose just three winners!

Panel of Judges: Roadman Butch, Ruby Roxx, Burgundy Brixx.

The Rock'n Dolls had an over whelming amount support from local businesses who generously donated merchandise and services to the top three winners as well as to all the other contestants. Sponsors included designers and shops such as, Lola GetsForever Yours LingerieScout BoutiqueLace Embrace Atelier, New World DesignsElement Botanical'sHallowville MannorGeronimo Tattoo & PeircingMirror Mirror BijouxSticky's Candy Langley, and The Speakerphones just to name a few. Buy the time Dixie and Lexi added up the total worth of all the prizes they had over 3100 dollars in merchandise and gift certificates.

All the Langley Pageant Competitors

Like all Rock'n Dolls pageants the themes are always a blast and this years was the best one they have imagined, I really hope that they do it again so I can participate! The theme this year was career women of the 1940's-1950's. Each contestant had a different career theme and it was really interesting to hear the history of each career, you could certainly tell that the girls put a lot of work into their outfits and research into their chosen career.

Miss Mandy of The Speakerphones
Career: Vintage Hairstylist

Miss Marie B
Career: Housewife

Miss Ruby
Career: Scretary

Sunnie Rays
Career: Factor Girl

Robyn Russia
Career: Doctor

There were several familiar faces and crowd favourites as well as some new additions to our ever growing community. The girls, in no particular order that braved the stage were, Sweet Lady J who represented a female flight attendant. Miss Dottie who was a female veterinarian. Chloe Demure chose to be a Woman's Army Corps Member - a career close to my heart beacause my gma served in WWII as a WAC member. Miss Mandy who fittingly represented a hair stylist of the 50's she even managed to show us how to do a beehive hairdo in less then 3 mins! Miss B Marie made the perfect 1950's house wife. Miss Ruby would have made Don Draper begging to have her be his secretary. Lolita Deville made the cutest 1950's car hop. Robyn Russia pulled out the big guns and showed us what a female doctor looked like in the 1950's. Sunny Rays would have made Rosie the Riveter very proud representing factory girls of yesteryears. Blackberry Betty represented a mid century nurse. Lola Getz gave us all an amazing history lesson on leg make-up sales girls. And Sugar Von Shaker was so creative with her representation of a female mechanic! Congrats to all of you. You all rocked the stage!

Miss Dottie
Career: Veterinarian

Chloe Demure of Save the Victory Roll

Sugar Von Shaker
Career: Mechanic

Lola Getz
Career: Leg Make-up Sales Girl

On to the top three. Every pageant has to have three competitors that stand out and wow the crowd. That being said I am so happy I just had to watch and didn't have to judge because that would have been a pretty difficult task to just pick three. Third place went to the lovely and sweet Blackberry Betty representing a mid century nurse and even brought her son as a patient making the judges and crowd laugh. It really was the sweetest thing. Second went to the stunning Lolita Deville who whized around on her rollerskates with her tray of sweet treats stealing the judges heart with her charm. Way to go you two!

Blackberry Betty
3rd Place Winner!
Career: Nurse

Lolita DeVille
2nd Place Winner!
Career: Car Hop

And here we are! The First Place Winner. When I heard Dixie and Lexi call this contestants name the crowd literally lost it. First Place when to none other then the blonde bombshell Sweet Lady J. Sweet Lady J killed it. She walked out with so much confidence and poise. She took the judges and the crowd on a smooth flight through the Langley Cruise in as she represented a stewardess of the 1950's. Sweet Lady J, you are such a gem. We are so proud of you over here at Pin-up Perfection and cannot wait to shoot with you soon. Congrats girl! You deserved this!

Sweet Lady J
Career: Stewardess
1st Place Winner!

Well guys and dolls there it is! Pin-up Perfection Photographys recap of the Rock'n Dolls Pinup Pageant at the Roadmen Round Up during the Langley Goodtimes Cruise in 2015! Pin-up Perfection Photography Top 5's!

Hey Guys and mostly Dolls today! I had a HUGE response from our last Top Ten entry on our favourite red lip sticks that I decided to do another one. As every woman knows a good foundation is key to a great clean look. There are several types of foundations on the market. Some that offer full coverage, light coverage, hd coverage, etc. So today I am going to let you know what our favourite brands are for daily use and why. I generally spend more on my foundation because I have issues with my skin, but I have tried to pick a decent range of prices to match any ones budget. I will say though, if you can spend more on your foundation you will get longer lasting wear and you can generally make foundation last a long time if you are using correctly. I can do a blog post on foundation application later if it is requested. Anyway, enough with the babbling and onto the make-up!

#1: Make Up For Ever - Mat Velvet + Mattifying Foundation - Sephora $44 CND

This is my personal favourite foundation. I am prone to oily skin with bad breakouts and this product offers the most coverage that leaves an absolutely flawless finish. It does not clog your pores, and will leave you with a mat finish for those of you, like me who tend to have oil break through on your T zone or other areas. The price is pretty steep if you are on a budget, but a little bit of this stuff goes a very long way. I can usually get 3 months worth of wear in one tube.

#2: Cover FX - Natural Finish Oil Free Foundation - Shoppers Beauty Boutique $40 CND

This product I really can't say enough about it. The name says it all. Cover FX make-up was created by Lee Graff, a clinical corrective make-up specialist. After working with several people with different skin conditions from acne to burns it was clear that there needed to be a product that had the most coverage but was still very easy on the skin. And voila! Cover FX was born. This product is great for any skin type especially those who have irritable skin, and it offers a huge spectrum of colours.

#3 Stila - Illuminating Liquid Foundation - Shoppers Beauty Boutique $50 CND

I haven't personally used this foundation on my skin I have applied it to a few clients faces when doing make-up in the studio. This Stila foundation offers AMAZING coverage and is just so rich. This foundation is excellent for people with normal to dry skin. Stila offers a great colour selection for people who are more porcelain in colour. The price is a little high, however, you can use this product pretty sparingly or if you are wanting a lighter coverage just add it to some of your favourite face cream and make a BB cream with it.

#4: Revlon - Photoready Foundation - Wallmart $12 CND

If you are a gal on a budget but need a really great foundation with good coverage then this is your foundation. I don't generally use drug store brands for my foundation just because I have issues with my skin but after hearing from several make-up artist friends that this product was the bees knees I had to give it a shot. The finish is really great and while its not as good as some high end brands it did a great job of covering all the redness I have in my skin tone. You really can't beat the price of this foundation, so if you are needing to save a few dollars I highly recommend this product. And as I always say, if you can find a drug store brand that works best for you, use it! This really is a great any day wear product.

#5. NARS - All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation - Sephora $59 CND

This product is the holy grail of foundation. The coverage is out of this world and like no other. While I beg to differ that it lasts all day, mind you I get pretty oily throughout the day, it did last on my skin for a good 10 hours before it started to show any oil breakthrough. A little bit goes a VERY long way. You can put less then a pea size on your hand to apply with a brush or to stipple with your finger tips (only on your own face) to get a great full coverage look. This foundation illuminates dull looking skin and leaves you looking fresh. The price is high but so worth every penny!

There you have it! Our top five every day use foundations. A good foundation is really important to well... be the foundation of your make-up. I am not telling anyone to go out and spend hundreds of dollars but I do recommend that you go and try out some new foundations until you find the one you love best and what works for your skin tone/type. Almost all cosmetic boutiques will give you a sample of foundation to try out. So what I suggest is hitting up your local Sephora or Beauty Boutique and get yourself colour matched and try some new products!

Best of luck on your journey to foundation. Any feed back you have please comment below!

Who is Pin-up Perfection Photography Part 7

Hey Guys and Dolls! Welcome to the 7th and final installment of "Who is Pin-up Perfection Photography". And who else could it be but yours truly, me! Helly Hepburn! I am the Area Event Coordinator and Blogger for Pin-up Perfection Photography. I am horrible about talking about myself but we are going to give it a shot!

In 2012 Pin-up Perfection Photography was offering a special at one of my favourite local stores, New World Designs, and my friend, local model Jen Kaboom, told me to book a shoot and without hesitation I did. I was hooked! I fell in love with pin-up style in 2004 when I stumbled upon Pinup Girl Clothing. So it was only a matter of time before I found myself immersing my life into this crazy, fun pin-up world by entering pageants and attending events. Embracing the lifestyle as well as embracing my body.

I have always prided myself as someone who loves to help others. I love seeing my friends succeed. So when I met Shimona I saw that she needed an extra set of hands on set and I asked to help out on shoots and with whatever else needed help with. Like with moving the studio... several times.(haha!) We quickly became friends and I started working for Pin-up Perfection Photography as much as I possibly could. I quickly found myself taking on the task of organizing and booking away shoots, organizing trade shows with Shimona, and most recently writing for the blog.

Since I was young I have always loved the written word. I believe that there is nothing more powerful or vulnerable as words on paper. Last year Pinup Girl Clothing hosted a contest,"Pinup Girl Clothing Changed My Life". I of course entered because Pinup Girl Clothing did change my life so I submitted my image and my little blurb. A few months ago I got my regular email from PUG to find my writing in the email, and later fellow model and friend Ruby Roxx told me that it was also on the website under the plus size section. (they have since updated their page). This was my proudest moment. Since then all I want to do is write!

Screen Shot of Helly Hepburn's writing as seen on the Pinup Girl Clothing Email and Website

When I am not working at the studio or writing I can be found pouring my heart and soul into my job in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside where I work as a supervisor at at low barrier shelter for women. Aside from working for women's rights consider myself to be a animal rights activist where I focus a lot of my attention on Pit Bull type breeds and can often be found snuggling with my 86 pound pit bull, Hemi. I am also a bit of a shop-aholic! I love on-line shopping as well as thrifting like several of my PUP team friends.

I am so happy and proud to be a part of this ever growing team of talented, beautiful, inspirational women. I am not only happy to be part of Pin-up Perfection Photography, but I am truly blessed to call these women my friends. So readers, there you have it! Helly Hepburn, the girl behind the words. Hope you enjoyed getting to know me, leave comments, share, and let me know what you want to see!

Need A Little Nightcap?

Everyone loves a little nightcap, especially if it comes in the glossy pages of Bachelor Pad Magazine. While our photographer, Shimona, was away touring the land down under, a package arrived for her and I so desperately wanted to open, but you know, legality issues. So I eagerly waited until she got home and last night I finally had the chance to feast my eyes on what can only be described as the sexiest Nightcap Edition of Bachelor Pad Magazine. Continue reading for my review on this saucy Fourth Edition!

Bachelor Pad Magazine has been in publication since 2007 and is truly a one of a kind. The issues come out quarterly and are enjoyed by readers and fans all around the world. Bachelor Pad Magazine began as the website Java's Bachelor Pad in 1999 by the magazines publisher Jason "Java" Croft who you may recognize from the radio show The Bachelor Pad Radio Show or you may have seen him host several burlesque shows. You can tell from the intricate and well thought pages of the magazine that Java has a real love of the female form and vintage bombshells.

The features in this issue are a Naughty Photo Safari: A Sin City Photo Safari at Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend held at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas every June. Where Bachelor Pad Magazine staff and models ride around Las Vegas in a double-decker bus and jump on and off at secret locations to snap images of the models. Pretty neat concept! The second feature is titled, "The Bare Facts On Modern Nudism". The article explores what it truly is to be a nudist in this day and age. It is a pretty interesting read and for those of you that have skinny dipped before you will relate. But you will have to grab your own copy to read the full story!

The pictorials of this issue are incredible. Starting with the girl next-door Miss Jeannie and images by talented queen of pin-ups, Shimona Henry. Followed by performer and mega babe Austin White  images by Kinksin. A stunning set by Victor Devilbliss featuring model Miss V.  Burlesque vixen Amber Ray graces the pages in a spread by photographer Marco A. Patino that will leaven you drooling. The Nightcap Edition #4 also features, Scarlette Saintclair, Strawberry Siren, Tatania Lyn, Violet D'vine, and Charlotte Champagne. To see all these spreads in all their uncensored beauty you will have to grab your issue quickly!

This issue has three incredible stories. The first titled "The Red Mid-Nite Ride Out", by Coleman W. Harding better known as THE S.U.I.T.  A fictional piece called "The Astronomer's Cure" written by Edward Varga. And my personal favourite story by curvy burlesque dancer Apple Angel, "Polishing the Apple - Happy Hour". And with a title like that you can only begin to imagine how naughty this story can get. But again, if you want to read this sexy stories you are really going to have to pick up your very own copy.

What we here at Pin-up Perfection Photography love most about Bachelor Pad Magazine is that it is true to its roots. It is a sexy, seductive, and imaginative magazine. It embraces the female form and celebrates women for their beauty without sexually exploiting. This publication sets the bar high for all pin-up and burlesque magazines. Thank you so much for having our work featured in this edition and we can't wait to work with you in the future.

The Miss Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show Pin Up Pageant

Ahh... summer... Nothing says summer quite like the rumble of a classic car starting up, or the growl of a motorcycle. Am I right? Or am I right? With classic cars comes car shows, and with car shows comes the pageant season. And this years pageant season started out with a bang! It was the first Miss Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show Pin Up Pageant last month and it was a blast. (this entry is really late, I had an accident and couldn't get it out until now).

Bobby Pinz Parlour, co-owned and operated by local hair stylist Lucy Lopez and her friend Adina Shore put together the first Miss Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show Pin Up Pageant hosted by the beautiful Dixie Delight  of the Rock'n Dolls. I was invited this year to help the girls competing make sure their hair was on point, and then of course cheering everyone on and cover the festivities.

All the beautiful pageant constants!

What set this pageant apart from the others was that there was absolutely no judging panel. Winners of the pageant was all left up to the voters choice. The girls were all given cards with their images on them and had to hand them out to the people walking around the car show, once given the card they had to make their way back to Billie's Barbershop and match the card of the girl they like best to the box with their image on it. The contestant with the most cards at the end won the title.

Logo for Bobby Pinz Parlour

There were places for First, Second, Third, as well as Best Hair and Best Over All Style. Best Hair went to Ladner local pinup girl Ms. Dany D'Lish who sang us a beautiful version of Que Sera Sera in her Q&A portion. Best Over All Style went to none other then the seamstress herself Ms. Cee Cee Devine. Cee Cee had the cutest outfit complete with a pineapple purse that she had made herself. It is only fitting that she won best style!

LEFT: Ms. Cee Cee Devine: Best Overall Style
RIGHT: Ms. Dany D'Lish; Best Hair

Now onto 2nd and 3rd place. While I truly believe, and this is going to sound totally cliché, every girl that took the stage that hot August day is a winner, there still has to be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 3rd place went to the ever so sweet mamma Ms. Blackberry Betty! (I also helped do her hair ;) 2nd Place went to the sultry Miss. Veronica Belle! Both these raven hair beauties rocked the stage with confidence and radiated perfection. I really look forward to watching them participate on the pageant circuit in the future.

Left: Lucy Lopez and 3rd Place Winner Black Berry Betty
Right: 2nd Place Winner Miss Veronica Bell

Finally the moment you have all been waiting for! The First Place Winner was the incredible Ms. Big Block Betty! Betty came with a huge fan base which was awesome to watch as this was her first pageant. She stole the show and did so with grace, poise, and pure personality. As someone who was just a speckator at this pageant it was really sweet to watch Ms. Big Block Betty hear that she won. It was so genuine and pure. You my dear are a star! A HUGE congratulations from us over here at Pin-up Perfection Photography. We cannot wait to get our hands on you and shoot!

Big Block Betty Winning the Title!

If you weren't there you truly missed out, but hopefully this paints a pretty good picture of the day. Can't wait to see what the gals over at Bobby Pinz Parlour have up their sleeve for next year!

Who is Pin-up Perfection Photography Part 6

Hey Guys and Dolls!

Welcome back to the 6th instalment of "Who is Pin-up Perfection Photography?" and I am tickled pink to introduce you to the incredible hair guru Lucy Lopez!!! This past January as Shimona and I were planning and gearing up for the Taboo Naught but Nice Sex Show we were hard pressed for hair stylists, and someone suggested Lucy. Without hesitation I messaged her to see if she was interested in helping out and she was stoked! Since then Lucy has been part of the Pin-up Perfection Photography Team.

Lucy Lopez
Image: Pin-up Perfection Photography

Lucy was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. After high school she apprenticed as a mechanic, but after a series of unfortunate events she found herself in beauty school at the Richmond School of Hairdressing. A few years later she wound up jobless on Christmas eve and knew it was her destiny to be self employed and Lucy Lopez Hair was born! She also started working at Billie's Barber Shop in Delta, BC. and has recently opened Bobby Pinz Beauty Parlour with her friend and fellow hair stylist Adina.

When Lucy is not busy working her tail off she can be found with her man better known as "Old Man Mike". Lucy and her guy love collecting vintage items and their home looks like a museum. She can also be found restoring her 1963 Ford Fairlane as well as Mikes grandmothers 1945 cruiser bike. Lucy has a real love of vintage shopping and has an excellent eye for some great pieces. She rarely gives up her secrets to her favourite thrifts spots but every once and a while she will share her knowledge of where to find the best scores! So, PAY ATTENTION!

Lucy is well known among her peers as the sarcastic funny girl. Humour is a big part of her life. Her motto is, "Don't measure. Cut once!" But don't let that scare you! Lucy is one of the most talented stylists, and has won awards for her incredible work. This past April she styled fellow pin-up model Dixie Delights hair and took the Best Hair award at the Viva Las Vegas Pin-up Pageant.

Lucy has gone through a lot of ups and downs in her life but she has finally found her passion and her love as well as somewhere she belongs. Do not get belonging confused with fitting in though, she was born to stand out. And stand out she does.

Keeping up with the selfie theme, Lucy Lopez doing her thing!

There she is everyone! The sexy, spicy, hilarious Latina babe that is Lucy Lopez. She is so much more then a pretty face and a genius with a brush and a can of hair spray! And we are so happy to have her as a part of our PUP team!
